Review of Red Home Birth written by a patient
23rd June 2015

Nessa was amazing from start to finish (aftercare too) she was really comforting and caring, listening to us and our needs as well as being fully supportive of our birth plan. She handled all of our aftercare really professionally but also personally and we have just been signed off which was quite sad but well will ever be thankful to her and the whole team to the support and care for our first child.

Consistently friendly and approachable midwife support throughout my antenatal care. Concerns were followed up swiftly and noted in my records. Appointments were often running very late, sometimes over an hour, although this was not the fault of the midwife. The Parent Journey day was useful- particularly to my partner as an opportunity to spend more time asking questions. However- this felt like a long day with a lot of information to take in. Ideally this should have been divided into at least 2 sessions, though I am assuming this is funding related since there are no other free antenatal classes in the county.

My antenatal care has been great, My midwife was very informative and answered all questions that I had. I felt she really cared about my pregnancy and made sure I was happy. I just hope I get her when I go into labour! They all do an amazing job. I feel good that my baby is being looked after.

Good care and friendly midwives Some quite dismissive comments when concerns raised about breast-feeding etc. Only significant downside was no appointments were given for visits, so could be sat in waiting for hours... not ideal when you have an older child to do things with as well as a newborn to take care of. One of our calls was just as we settled the little one, so we had to wake her for the check up! It wouldn't be too difficult for the liaison office to contract patients and give them an indicative time slot for the visit.

Being under the care of one midwife throughout pregnancy enabled trust and a positive rapport to be developed between patient and health professional. My midwife was vey personable and friendly. I found her very approachable and easy to discuss personal matters with, which I consider key criteria for a midwife. However, I felt as though my midwife was over stretched because she always seemed rushed and appointments (except where they were the first of the day) were always significantly late. The recommended number of appointments at the stages of pregnancy set out initially in my notes were not adhered to because appointment space was not always available. I was also alarmed to be be given information on NHS nct classes for dates after my expected date of delivery, despite having asked for this information on preceding appointments. I was surprised when a student midwife attended one of my appointments and carried out routine checks on me without me being asked for consent (fortunately I did not mind and would have commented if I did). I was slightly concerned that my midwife didn't double check the results. As my measurements were slightly small I was sent for a growth scan at approximately 37 weeks, and the results were normal. I still measured small at 39 weeks, and my midwife suggested she might send me for another growth scan following an appointment at 41 weeks. I pointed out that I didn't see what the benefit/purpose of this would be because, should the baby not already be born, induction would be carried out 5 days following the 41 week appointment (ie 12 days following due date). I considered it unlikely that a scan, consultant appointment and a decision to be induced earlier than the usual 12 days following the due date could be achieved within 5 days of the 41 week appointment. However I wasn't sure that my midwife understood what I was saying, which was disappointing. I reiterate that I felt I developed a good relationship with my midwife, and that I would put the negative issues I raise above down to her being over stretched.

Difficult to get appointments. Very busy ladies. Having to take a lot of time off work to make the appointments. Very often running 45 mins late. BUT Excellent care, nice ladies, very thorough and you didn't feel like your appointment was rushed

Midwife MANDY PETROO was an Angel of my day at QEQM hospital on 31st March 2015 , together with brilliant Dr Shardi Phisbin, Nurse Catherine, Violet, Sally, Surgen Gilad and student Kathelyn ...I got the best support and encouragement as I arrived hospital by emergency around 1am in re- scar pain in my 4 th c- section. I still remember each friendly and kind staff ' face with me at that special moment at surgeon room. I got a beautiful little girl now. I can not explain how greatfull and thanks to you all at Delivery suit of QEQM hospital. Thanks very much again. P.s: I do apologise for any misspelling of names or not remembering some staffs who were very kind to me on that day. Ly Pierson
